And a Dirndl... where did that come from?

A dirndl was not on my sewing list at the beginning of this week, but here it is - almost done!
My cousin from Germany came to visit, and we started talking about dirndls, and sewing in general, So I decided to make one.


I just looked at some pictures, and came up with this:

The Patriot's Riding Habit

I've wanted to make a riding habit for a while, and finally started one a few months ago, but then life happened and I didn't work on it for a long time, then I decided to finish it for our upcoming trip to Colonial Williamsburg *s queals* . This will be my fourth trip! I decided to make the habit look like the generals uniforms, so it's kind of a cosplay project. I draped the entire thing to myself which had it's trouble spots, but was enjoyable just the same. Enough talking - here are the pictures! Ready to cut out the waistcoat from the drafted pattern Waistcoat lining with puffy shirt  (the sleeves on the puffy shirt are ridiculously puffy :D )  And now with the fabric  And then I started draping the coat.  I'm sorry the lighting is so bad!  I didn't take any pictures of the construction of the coat, but here it is after I added the sleeves  And here it is after I had to modify the sleeves......

Colonial Williamsburg Fall 2016 Day 2

On day two, I wore the riding habit. It was overcast all morning, but it held off long enough for the fife and drum march - we got to see Clare again! Even if it was overcast, it was HOT, m ostly because of the humidity. Kristi and I retreated to the cool shade of the Carpenter's shop to play the harpsichord again.   Clare knew more about my riding habit than I did, and tied my scarf for me Never mess with a girl with a musket ;) Lunch at the King's Arms.  We got to see our waiter from last time - he remembered us!  Stuck a feather in her hat and called it macaroni! Next we decided to do something crazy. It started raining cats and dogs at lunch time. My parents went back to our hotel and left Kristi and I do have are adventures in the rain. We decided to walk to Great Hopes Plantation. Yeah. It's over half a mile in the pouring rain. We had one umbrella, but it didn't do much good. Our petticoats were soaked up to our waists, but ...

Leisl's Dancing Dress

I can remember always longing for Leisl's pink dress when I watched the Sound of Music as a little girl. I hadn't seen the Sound of Music in a long time, so we watched it a few nights ago. That old desire for Leisl's dress turned into a need. Edelweiss patterns has a pattern for Leisl's dress and several others, (you can see it here ), but I wanted to see what I could do without a pattern before I bought one. I found a blue chiffon curtain sash in our fabric stash, grabbed my dress form, scissors and a measuring tape and got to work. I wish I took pictures of each step, but in the excitement of the moment, pictures were not a high priority.  It is far from perfect, but I like it anyway :). Now I'm going to try to write how I made this little dress. 1) I made the lining by cutting a rectangle for the front, and two for the back. I put darts in the front to make it fit, and sewed the pieces together at the side seams. 2) I made the yokes buy cutt...
